Fibro is sometimes associated with autoimmune illnesses like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, etc. It is often thought to be triggered by a virus or injury.
Endometriosis or heavy periods may be associated with it, but early menopause is not. It may just have to do with the age at which you were 1st diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

I was Dx with FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome) about 15 years ago. I am now 53. My period ended about 4 years ago. This past week I saw my physician and requested that my hormone levels be tested. I have been a follower of Suzanne Somers for a number of years, and now that Oprah is on her band wagon…maybe 2+2 will begin to =4. (watch Oprah on Thursdays for Womens health, and bioidentical hormone info.)
I remember a few years ago reading an article about the increase in the Dx of FMS, mostly in middle age women.
Now, I have compaired my list of symptoms for the fibro and depression with the symptom list for a hormonal imbalance. I promise you that Oprah would put me on TV! The symptoms are almost identical!!! The bulk of the baby boomers are now over 50… of which 1/2 “should” be women in peri or menopause. I am getting ready to put my money on my fibro diagnoses being a *mis*-diagnoses. I bet I am hormonally imbalanced. If I had the energy, Id be contacting Oprah myself. This disease has cost me the last 20 years of my “life”. I am anxiously awaiting my results which I must take to a doctor who “believes” in hormonal imbalances. I had a child who was Dx with cancer as a baby. You can bet my adrenals are burnt out, and I am apple shaped…bless that cortisole..another hormonal issue.Unfortunately I have been so “sick”from the fibro that I have been found disabled by social security. My insurance is now medicaid. They wont cover “Integrative health practitioners”. So I have a long road ahead to find someone to help me.
Although I have never heard of menopause being considered an immune system disease. Fibro has almost always been refered to as a autoimmune disease. I hope some of this helps you.

Autoimmune – the body doing something it should not.

But Fibromyalgia is a case of the body not doing something it should. It is not maintaining the natural flow of all clear fluid throughout the body.

Did your doc do the chemical test for menopause? I had no periods for 25 years, then, on treatment for FMS, had normal, regular ones for 8 years. Now I’m 56, and had a first-ever ovarian cyst a few months ago. It resolved itself, but that’s the last period. Probably just about my age at this point. No problems of any kind.

To answer your question – Yes, they can be related. If your body is not healthy, it will not try to keep up your reproductive system.

So many have had hysterectomies from low-grade, undiagnosed FMS.

Get everything working correctly and you will know for sure.

    FMS is not autoimmune

itr has NOTHING to do with the clrear flow of body fluids (fibrofix)

IT IS a disorder of the brain/neuro system and NEUROTRANSMITTERS (brain chemcials, not fluids)

There is immune dysfunction in FMS–meaning that the body over or under reacts to FOREIGN germs-

autoimmune means teh body is attacking its self-thinking that some part of your body is unnatural-when it is what you wre born with

FMS is highly overdiagnosed by lazy incmpetant docs who use it as a general term for pain….

it is highly likely you do not have fms–that you have a hormonal problem alone that is causing pain and fatigue.

its not that ealrly menopause and fms are related–its that hormonal problems are misdiagnosed as FMS

    Very interesting question!

For a start: fibromyalgia is not an autoimmune disease and early menopause is not an autoimmune disease.

Now, fibromyalgia sufferers have an increased incidence of associated diseases (co-morbidities). This may be coincidental (migraine and a cold are frequent enough that you can have both) or it may be due to the fact that fibromyalgia needs a trigger to start expressing itself (trauma, infection or another disease). So, many fibromyalgia sufferers (30%) have another disease and it can be an autoimmune disease.

Early menopause (before the age of 40) may happen with the presence of an autoimmune disease (thyroid or diabetes). Note that I did not say “because” of an autoimmune disease.

So chances of having an autoimmune disease and developing fibromyalgia and early menopause are not impossible but certainly rarer than having fibromyalgia (6-13% of population) or early menopause (<1% of women in that age group).
